What Is Heart Surgery?

Heart surgery is a broad term covering any surgical procedure performed on the heart or the major blood vessels connected to it. Some procedures are "open heart," meaning the chest is opened and the surgeon works directly on the heart. Others are minimally invasive or catheter-based, using small incisions or threading instruments through blood vessels to reach the heart.

The most common reasons patients travel to Thailand for heart surgery include coronary artery disease (blocked arteries), heart valve problems, irregular heart rhythms, and aortic conditions. Thailand's cardiac centers handle the full spectrum, from routine diagnostic angiograms to complex multi-vessel bypass operations and even heart transplants at select hospitals.

What makes Thailand stand out is not just the cost savings. Bangkok hospitals perform thousands of cardiac procedures each year, which means their surgical teams have the kind of volume and experience that directly translates into better outcomes. Bumrungrad International Hospital, for example, reports zero in-hospital mortality and zero stroke across 430+ bypass surgeries performed annually. That kind of track record speaks for itself.

Types of Heart Surgery Available in Thailand

Thailand's cardiac hospitals cover the full range of heart procedures. Here's a breakdown of what's available, with links to detailed guides for each.

Coronary Procedures

Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) is the most well-known heart surgery. Surgeons create new pathways for blood to flow around blocked coronary arteries, using blood vessels taken from other parts of your body. This is often recommended when multiple arteries are significantly blocked. Bangkok's top hospitals offer both traditional on-pump and off-pump (beating heart) bypass, as well as minimally invasive CABG through smaller incisions. Learn more about CABG →

Coronary Angioplasty (also known as PCI or heart stent placement) is a less invasive alternative. A thin tube is guided through your blood vessels to the blocked artery, where a small balloon is inflated and a stent is placed to keep the artery open. This is common for patients with one or two blocked arteries. Learn more about Coronary Angioplasty →

Atherectomy uses specialized tools to remove plaque buildup from inside arteries. It's often used when stenting alone isn't enough, particularly for calcified or complex blockages. Learn more about Atherectomy →

Valve Procedures

Heart Valve Replacement is performed when a damaged heart valve needs to be replaced entirely with a mechanical or biological prosthetic valve. Thailand's cardiac surgeons are experienced with all valve types, including the aortic, mitral, tricuspid, and pulmonary valves. Both open surgery and catheter-based options like TAVI (transcatheter aortic valve implantation) are available at leading Bangkok hospitals. Learn more about Heart Valve Replacement →

Heart Valve Repair is preferred when the existing valve can be fixed rather than replaced. Repair tends to have better long-term outcomes and avoids the need for lifelong blood-thinning medication in many cases. Learn more about Heart Valve Repair →

Rhythm and Electrical Procedures

Cardiac Ablation treats irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias) by creating small scars in the heart tissue to block faulty electrical signals. Bumrungrad's electrophysiology team uses advanced 3D mapping technology for precise ablation, reporting a 100% success rate for atrial fibrillation procedures with just a 4.3% complication rate (compared to the US benchmark of 6.5%). Learn more about Cardiac Ablation →

Pacemaker Implant involves placing a small device under the skin that sends electrical impulses to keep your heart beating at a steady rate. Thailand's hospitals implant the latest generation of pacemakers, including leadless options. Learn more about Pacemaker Implant →

Electrophysiology Study (EPS) is a diagnostic test that maps the electrical activity of your heart to pinpoint the source of rhythm problems. It's often done just before an ablation procedure. Learn more about Electrophysiology Studies →

Other Cardiac Procedures

Aortic Aneurysm Repair treats dangerous bulges in the aorta. Both open surgical repair and minimally invasive endovascular repair (EVAR/TEVAR) are available at Thailand's cardiac centers. Learn more about Aortic Aneurysm Repair →

Left Atrial Appendage Closure (LAAC) is a procedure for patients with atrial fibrillation who can't take blood thinners long-term. A small device is placed to seal off the area of the heart where stroke-causing blood clots most commonly form. Learn more about LAAC →

Heart Surgery Costs in Thailand

Below is a hospital-by-hospital breakdown of what you can expect to pay for cardiac procedures in Thailand. Prices are from official hospital sources and include surgery, hospital stay, and standard post-operative care unless noted otherwise.

Bumrungrad International Hospital

Bumrungrad is widely regarded as the top choice for cardiac care in Southeast Asia. Their Heart Institute has over 30 internationally trained cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons, many with training from the US, UK, and Canada. The hospital performs 430+ bypass surgeries annually with zero in-hospital mortality and zero stroke, and their interventional cardiology team completes over 1,000 coronary interventions per year with a 99.2% success rate (compared to the US benchmark of 95%).

Bumrungrad's cardiac procedures generally range from 200,000 to 1,000,000 THB ($6,250 to $31,250), depending on the type and complexity of the procedure. They're also the only private hospital in Thailand performing heart transplants, with a one-year survival rate of 100%.

Notable technology includes the CardioInsight Noninvasive Mapping System (the only operational unit in Thailand) for diagnosing arrhythmias without catheter insertion, Carto SmartTouch 3D Mapping for precision ablation, and ECMO support for acute cardiac failure.

What Affects the Final Price

Heart surgery costs in Thailand depend on several factors beyond just the hospital you choose. The specific procedure matters most. A diagnostic angiogram costs a fraction of a complex multi-vessel bypass, and minimally invasive approaches sometimes carry different pricing than traditional open surgery.

Other factors include the type and number of implants used (mechanical vs. biological valves, drug-eluting vs. bare-metal stents), the length of ICU stay needed, your overall health and any complications during recovery, and whether additional diagnostics are required before surgery. Patients needing multiple procedures done at the same time (such as valve replacement combined with bypass) will see higher costs reflecting the added complexity.

Please note that the prices provided are estimations and may vary based on various factors. Additionally, these prices do not include flights or accommodation.

All prices are in USD, unless otherwise indicated.

Planning Your Trip to Thailand for Heart Surgery

A heart surgery trip to Thailand typically requires 2 to 4 weeks in the country, though the exact timeline depends on your specific procedure and recovery needs.

Pre-Surgery Phase (3 to 5 days)

Your first days in Thailand will be spent on consultations and pre-operative testing. Your cardiac surgeon will review any records you bring from home and likely order fresh diagnostics, including blood work, chest X-ray, echocardiogram, and possibly a CT scan or angiogram. This phase also gives you time to settle in and adjust to the time zone and climate before your procedure.

Surgery and Hospital Recovery (3 to 10 days)

Hospital stay varies significantly by procedure type. Catheter-based procedures like angioplasty or ablation may only require 1 to 2 nights. Open heart surgery such as bypass or valve replacement typically requires 7 to 10 days of in-hospital recovery, including time in the ICU immediately after surgery.

Post-Discharge Recovery (7 to 14 days)

After leaving the hospital, you'll stay nearby for follow-up appointments and monitoring. Your surgeon will want to check your incisions, review test results, and confirm you're stable enough for the flight home. For open heart surgery patients, most hospitals recommend staying in Bangkok for at least one to two weeks after discharge before flying.

Common Questions

How much does heart surgery cost in Thailand?

Arrow down

Heart surgery costs in Thailand range from about $2,000 for a diagnostic coronary angiogram to $45,000 for complex bypass surgery, depending on the hospital and procedure. Most patients save 50 to 80% compared to prices in the US, UK, or Australia. Costs typically include the surgery, hospital stay, ICU time, medications, and surgeon fees.

How long should I plan to stay in Thailand for heart surgery?

Arrow down

Plan for 2 to 4 weeks total. You'll need 3 to 5 days for consultations and testing, then the hospital stay itself (1 to 10 days depending on the procedure), followed by 1 to 2 weeks of recovery and follow-up appointments before flying home.

Are Thailand's cardiac hospitals safe for international patients?

Arrow down

Yes. Thailand's top cardiac centers hold JCI accreditation, the gold standard for international hospital quality. Bumrungrad, Bangkok Hospital, MedPark, and Praram 9 all carry this accreditation. Many cardiac surgeons trained in the US, UK, Canada, or Australia, and their outcomes often match or exceed Western benchmarks. Bumrungrad, for instance, reports a 99.2% success rate for coronary interventions and zero in-hospital mortality for bypass surgery.

What is the best hospital in Thailand for heart surgery?

Arrow down

Bumrungrad International Hospital is widely considered the leading cardiac center in Thailand. Their Heart Institute performs the highest volume of cardiac procedures in the country, and they're the only private hospital in Thailand performing heart transplants. Bangkok Heart Hospital is another top choice, operating Thailand's first dedicated private heart hospital. The best fit for you will depend on your specific condition and budget. Contact Konkai for a personalized recommendation.

Does medical insurance cover heart surgery in Thailand?

Arrow down

Coverage depends on your insurance policy. Some international health insurance plans cover procedures performed abroad, while others do not. Check with your insurance provider about coverage for overseas medical treatment, including any pre-authorization requirements. Many patients find that even paying out of pocket in Thailand is significantly less than their deductible or copay amount at home.

Can I combine heart surgery with other procedures?

Arrow down

Some patients combine cardiac procedures. For example, having valve repair done at the same time as bypass surgery is common. Combining unrelated procedures (such as cardiac surgery with a dental or cosmetic procedure) is generally not recommended due to the demands of cardiac recovery. Your surgeon will advise on what's safe to combine.

What types of heart surgery can I get in Thailand?

Arrow down

Thailand's top hospitals offer the full range of cardiac procedures: coronary bypass surgery (CABG), heart valve repair and replacement (including TAVI), coronary angioplasty with stenting, cardiac ablation for arrhythmias, pacemaker implantation, aortic aneurysm repair, electrophysiology studies, and heart transplants at select facilities. Both open heart and minimally invasive approaches are available.

What should I bring to my first consultation?

Arrow down

Bring all relevant medical records, including recent test results (echocardiogram, ECG, blood work, angiogram reports), a list of current medications and dosages, any imaging on CD or digital format, and a referral letter from your cardiologist at home if available.

Sending digital copies to Konkai Health in advance helps speed up the process as we can include these in your hospital file and so that your surgeon can review these ahead of your in-person consultation.

Is it safe to do Heart Surgery in Thailand?

Arrow down

Thailand has some of the best hospitals and medical facilities in the world, with highly skilled doctors and state-of-the-art technology. These facilities are accredited by international organizations, such as the Joint Commission International, ensuring that they meet global healthcare standards.

We have done extensive research and vetting to ensure that the hospitals and clinics we work with provide the highest quality of care and meet the same standards as medical facilities in developed countries. Does my insurance cover Heart Surgery in Thailand?

Arrow down

Whether medical insurance covers Heart Surgery in Thailand or not depends on the individual policy. Some policies cover the procedure, while others may not. It's important to check with your insurance provider to find out if Heart Surgery is covered and if there are any restrictions or limitations on coverage for medical procedures performed outside of your home country.

Some policies may require pre-authorization or pre-approval for medical procedures performed outside of your home country.

Emergency operation and post-surgery checkup

"I live in New Zealand, and my partner and I went on a holiday in Laos (Asia). I became sick and needed an emergency stomach operation. I reached out to this company, and they have been nothing but helpful.

They helped us with translating in Laos; they organised a taxi driver who was waiting for us at arrival and drove us to the hospital, where they organised a scan for me. I only needed to show my passport and an email when I arrived. I was already in the system for the appointment.

Everything went really smoothly. The company is professional and reliable, and the staff is super friendly too. I would highly recommend this company. I am grateful for the great service this company offered when I was in need."
