Understanding Total Hip Replacement

When considering hip replacement surgery in Thailand, a key factor for many patients is the cost-effectiveness of the procedure. The affordability of major surgeries in Thailand is a significant draw for medical tourists, with hip replacement being no exception.

Where the average cost of total hip replacement averages around $25,000 in United States and Australia, the cost is between the overall hip replacement package, which ranges from $7,000 to $15,000. The affordability of these comprehensive care packages is one of the factors that make Thailand an attractive destination for medical tourists seeking high-quality care and skilled surgeons.

Thailand's healthcare system has gained a reputation for providing high-quality medical care, particularly in the field of orthopedics. The expertise of Thai surgeons and the state-of-the-art facilities contribute to the country's status as a preferred destination for hip replacement surgery. Thai medical institutions offer a comprehensive range of services, ensuring that patients receive personalized care tailored to their specific needs.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Total Hip Replacement Surgery in Thailand

Pre-Surgery: Consultation and Medical Testing

Before undergoing THR, patients will need a complete physical examination to assess their overall health. This pre-surgery phase is crucial for ensuring the safety and success of the procedure. This may include blood tests, X-rays, and EKGs.

The consultation phase involves creating a detailed treatment plan tailored to the patient's specific health needs. It's an opportunity for patients to discuss their concerns and for surgeons to provide guidance on what to expect during and after the surgery.

Patients may also need to improve their physical health through exercises to strengthen their upper body and ensure they are at a healthy weight. It's also important to plan for the recovery period after surgery, including arranging for help at home and making necessary modifications to your home environment.

The costs for these preparatory steps are often included in the overall hip replacement package, which ranges from $7,000 to $15,000. The affordability of these comprehensive care packages is one of the factors that make Thailand an attractive destination for medical tourists seeking high-quality care and skilled surgeons.

The Surgical Procedure: What to Expect

The procedure typically lasts between 2-3 hours and is performed under general anesthesia. During the THR procedure, the surgeon removes the damaged cartilage and bone from the hip joint and replaces it with artificial components. The operation takes a few hours, with the specific surgical approach depending on the surgeon's expertise and the patient's individual needs. The most common approaches are posterior, anterior, and lateral.

Post-Surgery: Recovery and Rehabilitation in Thailand

The period following hip replacement surgery is crucial for ensuring a successful outcome. Patients typically undergo a structured recovery and rehabilitation process, which is meticulously planned to promote healing and restore mobility. In Thailand, this process is supported by a blend of advanced medical care and a nurturing environment conducive to recovery.

Post-surgery, patients will likely stay in the hospital for a few days before moving to a rehabilitation facility. A physical therapist will provide exercises to help regain strength and improve mobility. It's common to experience some pain and discomfort during the initial recovery period, but this can be managed with medication. Most people can resume normal activities 6 to 8 weeks after surgery, but full recovery may take several months.

  • Day 5-7
    • Post-operative care in the hospital.
    • Recovery and monitoring of the patient's condition.
  • Week 1-2
    • Transfer to the hotel for further recovery.
    • Physical therapy sessions begin.
  • Week 3-6
    • Continuation of physical therapy.
    • Patient can return to work if it's not physically demanding.
  • Week 7-12
    • End of physical therapy sessions.
    • Patient can resume low-impact sports activities.

Patients do not have to complete the entire rehabilitation process in Thailand, though it is recommended to complete at last a few weeks in Thailand for rehabilitation and before flying back home.

By the sixth month, patients are often able to engage in most of their pre-surgery activities, with improved joint function and less pain. It's important to note that individual recovery times can vary, and following the medical team's advice is essential for the best results.

The Costs of Total Hip Replacement

The cost of Total Hip Replacement in Thailand typically ranges from $7,000 to $15,000. The final price depends on the medical facility, the surgeon's expertise, the type of prosthesis used, and whether any additional treatments are required.

It's important to consider various factors such as the surgeon's expertise, hospital infrastructure, and the type of implant used. These elements, along with anesthesia, operating room charges, and the length of hospital stay, play a significant role in the overall cost and success of the surgery.

Remember, these costs do not include travel and accommodation expenses. Fortunately, the cost of living in Thailand is very affordable and you can find great 3-star hotels for as little as $50 USD per night.

Hip Replacement & Health Check Up

Pam and Konkai Health were absolute rock stars in helping us find a fantastic surgeon for my boyfriend's hip replacement in Thailand. We had previously paid for a service to help us find a doctor and it was just throwing money away. The paid service was slow to respond and only offered us quotes for the most expensive hospitals.

Pam on the other hand was a completely free service and was always quick to reply, patient with all of our questions, and presented a variety of options in our price range. She made the entire process of finding a doctor, setting up video conferences, and scheduling the surgery extremely easy. She continued to help us even after the surgery had taken place with follow up visits and final questions we had before traveling back home. We cannot recommend her highly enough!!! We will definitely be using her again for our next surgical needs.

Hip Replacement

Many thanks to Konkai. After an online inquiry Konkai guided me to Praram9 orthopedic for a consultation on a hip injury.  I had the consultation, clearly a femeral head collapse and needing the hip joint replacement.  The beauty was in a half day full consultation, x-ray, ekg, blood work, chest exam ... everything needed to proceed with surgery was done.

This was so professionally and efficiently done, all questions answered, no consultants, no referrals etc., all in house, all guided around the hospital.  A friendly caring class act. So I then came back to Konkai to setup for the operation, with the same orthopedic team led by Dr. Peerapong that made the assessment.  I returned 2 weeks later, admitted, had the replacement operation stayed 5 days with the hospital team, and quite frankly, it was a privilege to be in their care.

Now after 10 days recovery in Bangkok i am ready to return home. Why Thailand, well in my country New Zealand, you get passed around to specialists, consultants, it all takes time, does not engender trust, and i think the profit motive is primary like the American system.  Further, there are less facilities so more waiting for slots. Thailand has a care culture, and the expertise and professionalism with Konkai and Praram9 is superb.  They have top quality facilities and capacity to fit your schedule.

If i ever need any major surgery, this will be my first stop.  Thanks again

Cosmetic Surgery

Outstanding. The most safe, amazing communication these past couple of months with Pam from Konkai health. I asked soooo many questions there must be around 80+ emails from me and every single one has been replied in full. Even now 2 weeks after surgery. Super professional, and the surgeon Dr Thawatchai Boonpadhanapong, at Yanhee Hospital that Pam recommended to me for a breast implant removal, were just incredible. No money deposits asked for…just pure care.

The service and systems at Yanhee were out the gate. I am so glad I travelled all that way and didn’t do it in New Zealand as I don’t think it would’ve been as good haha. I was so looked after by the amazing nurses, anaesthetist, Dr Thawatchai and my interpreter Mr Wing. It’s overwhelming looking for the right fit and if it wasn’t for Konkai Health and Pam I wouldn’t be feeling as happy as I am now 2 weeks after my surgery. I cannot thank you enough for what feels like a life transformation :)

Emergency operation and post-surgery checkup

"I live in New Zealand, and my partner and I went on a holiday in Laos (Asia). I became sick and needed an emergency stomach operation. I reached out to this company, and they have been nothing but helpful.

They helped us with translating in Laos; they organised a taxi driver who was waiting for us at arrival and drove us to the hospital, where they organised a scan for me. I only needed to show my passport and an email when I arrived. I was already in the system for the appointment.

Everything went really smoothly. The company is professional and reliable, and the staff is super friendly too. I would highly recommend this company. I am grateful for the great service this company offered when I was in need."

"I can say that the whole medical journey was very pleasant. The information given before the actual start was good. The meeting and intake with the doctor was clear.

Konkai Health was always responding fast and helpful if I came up with questions. And the actual surgery had a good outcome also. Now I just ended my last check-up, and I am very delighted how everything went."

Was confused as to where to get good Medical Services in Thailand. This company was very responsive and helpful.

They directed me to a very reputable local Hospital where I was treated by a Doctor with great reviews.

Also, the cost for the procedure was very reasonable and a fraction of what it would cost me in the US.

I would highly recommend this company to others. 🙏♥️🙏
