Bumrungrad International Hospital opened in 1980 and is one of the largest private hospitals in Southeast Asia, with 580 beds and 62 clinics and centres on a single Sukhumvit campus. It was the first hospital in Asia accredited by Joint Commission International, in February 2002. Newsweek has ranked it the No. 1 hospital in Thailand for six consecutive years, and 96th of the world's 250 best hospitals in 2026.

Bumrungrad International Hospital opened on 17 September 1980 as a 200-bed facility on Sukhumvit Soi 3 and is now one of the largest private hospitals in Southeast Asia.

The campus holds 580 inpatient beds, 275 examination suites, 19 operating theatres and two cardiac catheterisation laboratories, with capacity for 5,500 outpatients a day. Bumrungrad runs 62 clinics and centres covering more than 70 medical subspecialties, staffed by over 1,200 physicians and dentists, over 900 nurses and more than 4,800 employees in total.

More than 1.1 million patients are treated each year, over 520,000 of them from outside Thailand, arriving from more than 190 countries. The hospital runs 22 international referral offices across Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

Accreditations & Recognition

  • Joint Commission International, accredited since February 2002 as the first hospital in Asia, and re-accredited continuously since
  • Advanced Hospital Accreditation from Thailand's Healthcare Accreditation Institute, certificate valid May 2025 to May 2029. Bumrungrad was the first hospital in Thailand certified under the programme, in 1999
  • Global Healthcare Accreditation with Excellence, first awarded in 2017 as the first non-US hospital to hold it
  • College of American Pathologists laboratory accreditation since 2016, the first private hospital in Thailand to hold it
  • JCI Clinical Care Program Certification for Heart Failure, awarded 2022 and renewed 2025, and for Breast Cancer, awarded 2025
  • DNV GL certification to the Managing Infection Risk standard, and ANCC Pathway to Excellence, both firsts in Asia
  • SIDCER recognition for ethical review of health research, 2016
  • Licensed by Thailand's Ministry of Public Health under the Private Hospital Act B.E. 2541 (1998)

Newsweek and Statista have ranked Bumrungrad the No. 1 hospital in Thailand for six consecutive years, 2021 to 2026, and 96th of the 250 World's Best Hospitals in 2026, the only Thai hospital in the global top 100 for a second year running. In Newsweek's Best Specialized Hospitals Asia-Pacific 2026 it was listed in all ten ranked specialties and placed first in Thailand in eight: cardiology, cardiac surgery, endocrinology, gastroenterology, oncology, orthopaedics, paediatrics and pulmonology.

Medical Team & Expertise

The majority of Bumrungrad's physicians hold international board certifications from the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan and other advanced economies with developed healthcare systems.

Case management is multidisciplinary, with specialists from different centres coordinating on complex referrals. That is the practical difference from a single-specialty clinic: a patient needing a cardiology opinion before a joint replacement is handled inside one building rather than across three.

Technology & Equipment

  • 19 operating theatres, two cardiac catheterisation laboratories and two dedicated cardiac operating theatres
  • Robotic-arm assisted total knee and hip replacement (MAKOplasty)
  • CardioInsight non-invasive cardiac mapping, using 252 electrodes to map the heart's electrical activity before ablation
  • ORA refractive analysis and the VERION image-guided system in cataract surgery, with IOLMaster and ARGOS biometry
  • OCT angiography and CLARUS fundus imaging in the Eye Centre
  • A hospital-wide electronic medical record, so results and imaging follow a patient between centres on the same visit

Specialized Services

The centres Konkai refers to most are health screening, cardiology, orthopaedics, colorectal surgery, ophthalmology and plastic and reconstructive surgery.

The international patient infrastructure is the most developed in our partner network: in-house interpreters, a free airport shuttle from Suvarnabhumi, visa extension support through the Business Center, and a Cultural Helpdesk on the 10th floor Sky Lobby. Details and the booking conditions are in the FAQs below.

Common Questions

How do I make an appointment at Bumrungrad?

Arrow down

The quickest way is our Bumrungrad booking form. It collects everything the hospital needs to open your file and match you to the right specialist, so we can go straight to confirming a date rather than going back and forth.

If this is your first time at Bumrungrad, we need a copy of your passport to complete your patient registration. We will send you your hospital number (HN) once registration is done, and that number is used for every future appointment and for anything held in your medical file. If you already have an HN from a previous visit, send it with your request and we can book straight away.

You can also reach us through our contact form, by email or on WhatsApp if you would rather talk it through first. There is no charge for any of this.

Konkai Health handles the registration and booking with the hospital directly, so you are not queuing in their referral inbox.

Which hospital is better, Bumrungrad or Bangkok Hospital?

Arrow down

Both hospitals rank among Thailand's top healthcare facilities, with Bumrungrad named the best hospital in Thailand by Newsweek for five consecutive years (ranked 100th globally in 2025), while Bangkok Hospital is ranked in the top five nationally. The choice between them depends on your specific medical needs and preferences.

Bumrungrad was the first hospital in Asia to receive JCI accreditation in 2002 and treats over 1 million patients annually, including more than 500,000 international patients from over 190 countries. Bangkok Hospital also maintains JCI accreditation and serves over one million patients annually with multiple Centers of Excellence.

Both hospitals offer advanced medical technology and experienced internationally-trained doctors. Our medical team at Konkai Health can help you determine which hospital is best suited for your specific condition or treatment, taking into account factors like specialist expertise, treatment approaches, and your individual medical history.

Is Bumrungrad the best hospital in Thailand?

Arrow down

Bumrungrad has been ranked the No. 1 hospital in Thailand by Newsweek and Statista for six consecutive years, from 2021 to 2026. In the 2026 World's Best Hospitals list it placed 96th of 250, the only Thai hospital in the global top 100 for a second year running. In Newsweek's Best Specialized Hospitals Asia-Pacific 2026 it was ranked first in Thailand in eight specialties: cardiology, cardiac surgery, endocrinology, gastroenterology, oncology, orthopaedics, paediatrics and pulmonology.

It was also the first hospital in Asia accredited by Joint Commission International, in February 2002, and has held that accreditation since.

Rankings measure the hospital, not the fit. Several other Bangkok hospitals hold international accreditation and some are stronger in specific areas, and Bumrungrad is at the premium end on price. The right question is usually which hospital is best for your condition and budget rather than which ranks highest overall.

Konkai Health can tell you where Bumrungrad genuinely leads for your procedure and where another partner would serve you better, and get you written estimates from both.

How expensive is Bumrungrad?

Arrow down

Costs at Bumrungrad vary significantly depending on the type of medical service you require. Health check-up packages typically range from THB 8,300 for basic screenings to THB 18,600 or more for comprehensive packages with advanced diagnostics. Full-body check-ups including advanced imaging can cost between $800 to $1,500 or more.

For surgical procedures, costs vary widely by complexity. Many procedures at Bumrungrad cost 50-70% less than equivalent treatments in Western countries while maintaining international quality standards. However, Bumrungrad is positioned as a premium hospital in Thailand, so their pricing is generally higher than other quality private hospitals in Bangkok.

For accurate pricing tailored to your specific medical needs, reach out to our team at Konkai Health. We can provide detailed cost estimates for your treatment, compare pricing across different hospitals if needed, and help you understand exactly what's included in the quoted price.

How much is an MRI at Bumrungrad?

Arrow down

Bumrungrad does not publish MRI prices, so most of what you find online is guesswork. These are the figures our own patients have been quoted by the hospital:

  • Full body MRI, around 72,000 THB. This is the figure Bumrungrad has quoted our patients through 2026
  • Doctor's consultation, from 1,000 THB, billed separately. This is not optional: Bumrungrad's radiology department will not book an MRI scan without a specialist seeing you first and issuing the order
  • Targeted single-region scans (brain, spine, knee) come in well below the full body figure and are quoted per case

Konkai coordinates referrals into Bumrungrad every week, so our numbers above come from real cost estimates issued to real patients rather than from a price aggregator. A quote for your own scan can still differ: contrast, the number of regions covered and whether a specialist review is included all move the figure.

Konkai Health will request a written MRI quote from Bumrungrad for the exact scan you need.

Does Bumrungrad have international patient services?

Arrow down

Yes, Bumrungrad has extensive international patient services. The hospital maintains 23 referral offices internationally and treated more than 520,000 international patients from over 190 different countries in 2018. A Medical Coordination Office provides services for international patients, including travel services and cultural support officers to help patients who do not speak English.

Services available for international patients include appointment coordination, treatment planning, travel logistics assistance, medical inquiries support, communication between doctors, and follow-up care. They can also assist with visa matters, hotel accommodations, and airport transfers.

At Konkai Health, we work directly with these international patient services on your behalf, streamlining the entire process for you and keeping a single point of contact during your entire medical journey. We handle all communication with the hospital, coordinate your appointments, ensure you receive accurate cost estimates, and provide support throughout your medical journey, all at no additional cost.

Arrow down

Languages spoken include Amharic, Arabic, Bahasa Indonesia, Bengali, Cantonese, Chinese, English, French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Khmer, Korean, Mandarin, Mongolian, Myanmar, Nepali, Russian, Thai, Urdu, and Vietnamese.
