Phakic IOL is a refractive surgery procedure where an artificial lens is implanted in the eye without removing the natural lens. This corrects refractive errors by adding to the eye's optical power. It is best for individuals with extreme refractive errors, thin corneas, or dry eye syndrome. The procedure carries risks like cataract development, increased eye pressure, and potential damage to the cornea.
Before the procedure, patients undergo a comprehensive eye examination to measure refractive errors and assess eye health. The surgeon measures the eye's interior with a process called biometry to select the right lens size and power. Discontinuation of contact lens use is usually required before these assessments and the surgery.
In Phakic IOL surgery, a small incision is made in the cornea to insert the IOL. The lens is positioned either between the iris and the natural lens (posterior chamber lens) or just in front of the iris (anterior chamber lens). It's a minimally invasive procedure that typically takes around 15 to 30 minutes per eye.
After the procedure, the patient may feel slight discomfort or a foreign body sensation, which typically resolves within a day or two. Most patients notice improved vision almost immediately, although full visual recovery varies from patient to patient. Regular postoperative follow-ups are essential for monitoring the eye's response to the new lens.
The cost of Phakic IOL surgery in Thailand can range between $1,500 to $2,500 per eye, depending on the IOL type and the surgeon's experience. Note that these costs do not include your travel and accommodation expenses.
