Founded in 1964 by Professor Dr. Uthai Rutnin, Rutnin Eye Hospital is Thailand's first hospital specializing exclusively in ophthalmology. Around 40 board-certified ophthalmologists trained in Thailand, Canada and the United States cover every eye subspecialty, supported by three international-standard operating theatres, a day surgery unit and a 24-hour inpatient department. Rutnin publishes its cataract surgery prices openly, by lens type.

Rutnin Eye Hospital opened in 1964 as Thailand's first hospital dedicated exclusively to ophthalmology, founded by Professor Dr. Uthai Rutnin. It has remained single-specialty for over 60 years. All eye subspecialties are represented in one building, and patients are cross-referred internally when an examination identifies a condition outside the reason for their visit.

The facility includes an outpatient clinic, day surgery unit, three operating theatres, an injection room, inpatient unit and laser suite. The theatres are dedicated to eye surgery and use positive air pressure, ultraviolet air disinfection and HEPA filtration. An anaesthetist attends every surgical case.

Most eye surgery is performed as a day case. The inpatient unit allows Rutnin to handle procedures that require an overnight stay, including those performed under general anaesthesia, which specialist day clinics cannot offer. Rooms are available in Deluxe and VIP configurations with 24-hour nursing, and are touchscreen-equipped for control of lighting, air conditioning, curtains and nurse calls at the bedside.

Common Questions

What treatments and specialties does Rutnin Eye Hospital offer?

Arrow down

Rutnin Eye Hospital has practised ophthalmology exclusively since 1964, when it opened as Thailand's first hospital dedicated to eye care. It covers every eye subspecialty: cataract surgery, LASIK and refractive surgery, retinal disease including diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration, glaucoma, corneal transplantation, uveitis, neuro-ophthalmology, ocular oncology, oculoplastic surgery, and paediatric ophthalmology.

Because all subspecialties are in one building, patients are cross-referred internally when an examination identifies a condition outside the reason for their visit.

Konkai Health can help identify the right specialist for your condition and coordinate your consultation and treatment plan.

What accreditations and technology does Rutnin Eye Hospital have?

Arrow down

Rutnin Eye Hospital is licensed by Thailand's Ministry of Public Health and regulated under the Private Hospital Act B.E. 2541 (1998). It opened in 1964 as Thailand's first hospital dedicated exclusively to ophthalmology.

Diagnostic and surgical equipment includes IOLMaster 700 optical biometry, Callisto computer-assisted surgical guidance, Zeiss Cirrus 6000 OCT and Optos California retinal imaging, Pentacam and OPD Scan corneal analysis, phacoemulsification systems, femtosecond lasers for refractive surgery, and vitreoretinal surgical equipment. The three operating theatres are dedicated to eye surgery and use positive air pressure, ultraviolet air disinfection and HEPA filtration, with an anaesthetist attending every case.

Many of Rutnin's ophthalmologists completed fellowships in the United States, Europe and Australia. Konkai Health works only with hospitals and clinics we have vetted directly.

Does Rutnin Eye Hospital accept international patients?

Arrow down

Yes. Rutnin treats international patients but unlike the large multi-specialty hospitals in Bangkok, Rutnin does not operate a dedicated international patient department. Appointments and quotes are arranged directly with the relevant clinic and the surgical scheduling desk.

Konkai Health handles that coordination for you: we book appointments, request written quotes, confirm interpreter availability for your language, and stay in contact with the hospital team throughout your treatment.

How much does treatment cost at Rutnin Eye Hospital?

Arrow down

Rutnin publishes prices for many of its services and quotes the rest after examination. Current published prices for international patients (2026):

  • Cataract surgery — from 73,000 THB per eye with a monofocal lens, up to 175,000 THB per eye for a trifocal toric lens
  • Pterygium surgery — from 55,000 THB per eye
  • Glaucoma surgery (trabeculectomy) — 62,000 THB
  • Dry eye treatment with Eye-Light OPE®IPL and lid massage — 21,450 THB for three sessions covering both eyes
  • Comprehensive eye screening — 7,000 THB for diabetic eye screening, 7,500 THB for a full screen for ages 40 and above, 9,600 THB for glaucoma screening
  • General eye examination — from 4,500 THB

What each package covers is not identical. The cataract package includes the operating and recovery room, medical supplies, surgical medications, the surgical team and the anaesthetist, but bills the doctor's fee and pre-operative consultation separately. The glaucoma surgery package does include the surgeon's and anaesthetist's fees along with take-home medication. Worth checking before comparing Rutnin against a clinic that quotes a single all-in figure.

Konkai Health can request a written estimate from the hospital covering surgical fees, diagnostic testing, consultation fees, medications and follow-up visits, so you know the full cost before you travel.

How can I book a consultation or appointment at Rutnin Eye Hospital?

Arrow down

The quickest way is our Rutnin Eye Hospital booking form. It collects everything the hospital needs to open your file and match you to the right specialist, so we can go straight to confirming a date rather than going back and forth. You can also reach us through our contact form, by email or on WhatsApp if you would rather talk it through first.

An initial consultation involves a full eye examination covering visual acuity, intraocular pressure, refraction and a slit-lamp examination, and usually includes dilating drops, so you should not plan to drive for around four hours afterwards. Diagnostic testing, specialist consultation and treatment planning can often be completed in a single visit, though complex cases may need more than one appointment.

Consultations at Rutnin are conducted in English and Thai.
