Rutnin Eye Hospital opened in 1964 as Thailand's first dedicated ophthalmology facility, founded by Professor Dr. Uthai Rutnin after completing his fellowship at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard University, under Dr. Charles Schepens. Dr. Rutnin became Thailand's first retina surgeon and helped modernize ophthalmology across the country. Before establishing the hospital, he was one of the founders of Ramathibodhi Teaching Hospital, Mahidol University, and chaired the Ophthalmology Department there for many years. The hospital has maintained its focus on specialized eye care for over 60 years.
The facility includes an outpatient clinic, day surgery unit, three operating theaters, an injection room, inpatient unit, and laser suite. Rutnin's touchscreen-equipped patient rooms allow control of lighting, air conditioning, curtains, and nurse calls at the bedside. The hospital operates from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM Monday through Saturday, 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM on Sundays, and maintains 24-hour inpatient care.
