A colonoscopy is a screening procedure that uses a flexible camera to examine the inside of your large intestine (colon) and rectum. It is the most effective screening test for colorectal cancer, polyps and other digestive conditions as early as possible.
Doing your colonoscopy at one of Thailand's top medical hospitals means you still get the same technology as found in the top hospitals across the US and Europe, while paying a lower price. Thai hospitals offer transparent pricing that include everything from sedation to doctor consultation fees and the procedure can be scheduled in a manner of days.
This guide covers everything you would want to know about doing your colonoscopy in Thailand, covering costs, hospitals and technology used.
Please note that the prices provided are estimations and may vary based on various factors. Additionally, these prices do not include flights or accommodation.
All prices are in USD, unless otherwise indicated.
A colonoscopy is a procedure where a gastroenterologist inserts a thin, flexible tube with a camera (called a colonoscope) through the rectum to examine the entire length of the large intestine. It's the most accurate way to screen for colorectal cancer and detect precancerous polyps before they become a problem. The procedure itself takes 20 to 45 minutes and you'll be sedated during the procedure, so you won't feel anything while the exam takes place.
If the doctor finds any polyps (small growths on the lining of your colon), they will usually remove them on the spot if they are smaller than 1 cm. Polyps larger than that size will be documented during the exam and the gastroenterologist will discuss the findings after the screening and recommendations for how to best remove the larger polyps.
Some patients opt to do a gastroscopy (upper endoscopy) at the same time while they are already sedated for the colonoscopy. Doing both procedures at the same time is more efficient because you only need to prepare your bowels and undergo sedation once. Many hospitals offer combo packages that cover both procedures in a single session so that the doctor can also examine your esophagus, stomach, and upper intestine and rule out any conditions in the whole system instead of just the colon area.
Who Should Get a colonoscopy?
If you are at average risk, current guidelines recommend routine screening colonoscopies starting at age 45 and then a repeat screening every 5 to 10 years.
However, If you have family history of colorectal cancer or a personal history of inflammatory bowel diseases, like Crohn's or ulcerative colitis, or any symptoms that could indicate inflammation like blood in your stool or unexplained abdominal pain, more regular screening is recommended.
Our clients choose to do their colonoscopy in Thailand for a variety of reasons. For many of them it is cheaper to do the procedure in Thailand than in their home country but there are also other reasons unrelated to just cost. Many other countries have lengthy waiting lists or require a specialist referral to do a colonoscopy which is not the case in Thailand, your colonoscopy in Thailand can be scheduled in a manner of days and there is no referral required to consult with a gastroenterologist. Is is also very easy to combine with your holiday or to combine with a full health check-up to make the most of your visit.
The second main reason is the quality of private healthcare in Thailand. Not only is it cheaper and faster, you don't have to sacrifice quality of treatment at all. We work with JCI-accredited hospitals and gastroenterologists who are a member of bodies like the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) and have Thai and American board certifications and international training.
