A gastroscopy (also called an upper GI endoscopy or EGD) is a procedure where a doctor passes a thin, flexible tube with a camera down your throat to examine your esophagus, stomach, and the first part of your small intestine. It's used to diagnose conditions like acid reflux, ulcers, H. pylori infections, and early-stage stomach cancer.
This guide covers gastroscopy costs at our partner hospitals in Bangkok, what the procedure involves, how to combine it with a colonoscopy in the same session, and how to plan your visit.
Please note that the prices provided are estimations and may vary based on various factors. Additionally, these prices do not include flights or accommodation.
All prices are in USD, unless otherwise indicated.
People choose to do their gastroscopy in Thailand for multiple reasons
During a gastroscopy, your gastroenterologist (a doctor who is specialized in diagnosing and treating disorders of the digestive system) will insert a thin, flexible tube that is fitted with a small camera and a light at the end into your throat. The images from the camera are displayed on a monitor so that the doctor can inspect every area of your upper digestive tract in detail.
The procedure focuses on three areas: the esophagus (the tube that carries food from your throat to your stomach), the stomach itself, and the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine). During the exam, the doctor can also take tissue samples (biopsies) for lab testing, check for H. pylori bacteria, identify ulcers, detect inflammation, and spot early signs of cancer. Small polyps or abnormalities can sometimes be removed on during the gastroscopy, which means you don't need to schedule a follow-up procedure.
Most patients choose to be sedated through an IV during the procedure, so you feel drowsy and relaxed but are not completely unconscious. However, you can also choose a throat spray that numbs the back of your throat or deeper sedation under the supervision from an anasthesiologist if you prefer to be fully asleep while the gastroscope takes place.
The whole procedure takes between 15 and 30 minutes and does not cause any pain during or after the procedure. In case you chose the throat spray over sedation, you might feel some pressure or mild gag reflex while the tube is inserted into your throat
Who Should Get a Gastroscopy?
A gastroscopy is recommend for people who have persistent heartburn or acid reflux that does not improve with medication. It is also recommend if you experience difficulty swallowing, nausea or vomiting (unexplained), pain in your upper abdomen or unexplained weight loss.
It is also recommended for high risk groups, those with a family history or genetic predisposition for stomach cancer.

The two procedures are commonly done together in a single session. This is called a gastroscopy + colonoscopy combo (or "combo endoscopy"). Since the bowel preparation required for a colonoscopy is the most demanding part of the process, adding a gastroscopy to the same session requires very little extra effort from the patient. You'll already be fasting and sedated, so the gastroscopy adds only about 15 minutes to the total procedure time.
If you're over 40 and getting a colonoscopy for screening, it's worth considering the combo. The price difference between a standalone colonoscopy and a combo is typically 10,000 to 15,000 THB ($320 to $480), which gets you a thorough examination of your entire digestive tract in one visit.

Many patients choose to receive biopsy results by email after returning home. If you had a combined gastroscopy + colonoscopy, you can typically fly home 1 to 2 days after the procedure.
