What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that enhances breast size and shape through the placement of implants or, less commonly, fat transfer from other areas of the body. The procedure typically takes 1-2 hours under general anesthesia.

Why people choose breast augmentation:

  • Increase breast size for better proportion with their body
  • Restore volume lost after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss
  • Correct asymmetry between breasts
  • Enhance self-confidence and body image
  • Reconstruct breasts after mastectomy

The procedure is straightforward, a small incision (3-5cm) is made in a discreet location, a pocket is created either under the breast tissue or beneath the pectoral muscle, and the implant is carefully positioned before closing with sutures. The procedure is also known as a boob job, breast implant, breast enlargement or breast enhancement, these all refer to the same procedure.

Breast Augmentation Costs in Thailand

Thailand offers significant cost savings compared to Western countries while maintaining high standards of care. Prices vary based on hospital, surgeon, and implant brand selected.

What Affects Your Final Price

Several factors influence your total cost:

  • Implant brand: Motiva typically costs more than Mentor due to advanced technology
  • Implant size: Larger implants (>400cc) may have slightly higher costs
  • Surgical complexity: Revision surgery or combined procedures cost more
  • Hospital tier: Premium hospitals charge more than clinics
  • Surgeon experience: Top surgeons command higher fees
  • Additional procedures: Combining with breast lift, liposuction, or tummy tuck affects total cost

Prices shown are estimates based on 2025-2026 data. Contact Konkai for current pricing at specific hospitals.

Your Surgical Choices: Incisions, Placement, and Implants

Several decisions go into planning your breast augmentation. Understanding these choices helps you have productive conversations with your surgeon during consultation.

Incision Locations

Where your surgeon makes the incision affects scarring visibility, surgical access, and recovery. Three main approaches are used in Thailand.

Breast augmentation incision locations
  1. Inframammary (Under the Breast Fold): The incision is made in the natural crease beneath the breast. This is the most common approach used by surgeons in around the world (including Thailand).
    • Advantages: The scar hides within the breast fold and becomes nearly invisible over time. This approach provides excellent surgical visibility, allows placement of larger implants, and makes wound care straightforward. Scar length is typically 3-4 centimeters.
    • Considerations: The scar may be visible when lying down without a bra, though it fades significantly over 6-12 months.
  2. Transaxillary (Under the Armpit): The incision is made in the natural crease of the armpit, often using an endoscope for guidance. PPSI, Wansiri, and The Art Clinic all offer this technique.
    • Advantages: No scar on the breast itself. The scar hides in the armpit crease. Endoscopic guidance minimizes nerve damage and allows precise implant placement.
    • Considerations: Limited implant size options compared to inframammary. May require specialized equipment and surgeon experience. Slightly longer surgery time.
  3. Periareolar (Around the Nipple): The incision is made along the lower edge of the areola where the darker skin meets the lighter breast skin.
    • Advantages: Scar blends with the natural color transition around the areola. Works well for patients with larger, thicker areolas.
    • Considerations: Higher risk of temporary or permanent changes to nipple sensation. May increase risk of breastfeeding difficulties. Not suitable for very small areolas or large implants. Some studies suggest slightly higher capsular contracture rates.

Your surgeon will recommend an incision approach based on your anatomy, implant size, and personal preferences. Many Thai surgeons prefer the inframammary approach for its versatility and reliable results.

Implant Placement

Where the implant sits in your chest affects the final appearance, feel, and long-term results.

Breast implant placement options
  1. Subglandular (Above the Muscle): The implant is placed between the breast tissue and the pectoral muscle. This approach suits patients with adequate natural breast tissue to cover the implant.
    • Advantages: Shorter surgery and recovery time. Less post-operative pain. Implants settle into final position faster. No distortion during muscle flexing.
    • Considerations: Implant edges may be more visible or palpable in thin patients. Higher risk of visible rippling. May have slightly higher capsular contracture rates.
  2. Submuscular (Under the Muscle): The implant is placed beneath the pectoral muscle. This is often recommended for patients with minimal natural breast tissue.
    • Advantages: More natural appearance, especially in thin patients. Lower capsular contracture rates. Better mammogram imaging. Less visible rippling.
    • Considerations: Longer recovery with more initial discomfort. Implants may shift during chest muscle flexing ("animation deformity"). Takes longer for implants to settle into final position.
  3. Dual Plane: A hybrid approach where the upper portion of the implant sits under the muscle while the lower portion is covered by breast tissue only. Many Thai surgeons, particularly at The Art Clinic and Rattinan, favor this technique.
    • Advantages: Combines benefits of both placements. Natural slope at the bottom with muscle coverage at the top. Reduced risk of capsular contracture. Good option for patients with mild breast sagging.
    • Considerations: More technically demanding surgery. Recovery similar to submuscular placement.

Implant Brands

Thai hospitals offer premium implant brands used worldwide. The two most popular are Motiva and Mentor.

Motiva (Establishment Labs, Costa Rica)

Motiva implants represent 6th generation technology and have become increasingly popular in Thailand. PPSI uses Motiva exclusively, while Yanhee, Rattinan, and The Art Clinic offer them alongside other brands.

Motiva Round: Provides upper pole fullness for a fuller cleavage. Contains Progressive Gel Plus that maintains shape while allowing natural movement.

Motiva Ergonomix: Designed to shift between round and teardrop shapes depending on body position, mimicking natural breast dynamics. Features SmoothSilk nanotextured surface.

Motiva Cone: Teardrop-shaped for patients wanting a more natural slope.

Key features include BluSeal barrier layer (provides visual rupture indication), Q Inside Safety Technology (microchip for implant identification), and lifetime warranty.

Mentor (Johnson & Johnson, USA)

Mentor has been FDA-approved since 2006 and is one of the most trusted brands globally. Yanhee, Rattinan, and The Art Clinic all offer Mentor implants.

Mentor MemoryGel: Cohesive silicone gel that maintains softness while holding its shape. Available in smooth and Siltex (microtextured) surfaces.

Mentor MemoryShape: Anatomical (teardrop) implants with form-stable gel that maintains shape in any position.

Mentor comes with lifetime warranty covering implant defects and capsular contracture.

Other Brands

Sebbin (France): European manufacturer known for quality textured and smooth implants. Available at Yanhee.

Silimed (Brazil): Offers both textured and smooth options at competitive price points. Available at Yanhee from 116,000 THB.

Implant Shapes

Breast implant shapes

Round Implants: Provide equal fullness throughout the breast with more upper pole projection. Creates fuller cleavage. If rotation occurs, it doesn't affect appearance. Most commonly chosen by patients seeking a fuller look.

Teardrop (Anatomical) Implants: Designed to mimic the natural slope of the breast with more volume at the bottom. Best for patients wanting subtle, natural enhancement. Requires textured surface to prevent rotation.

Ergonomix (Motiva’s Round-to-Teardrop Shape): A hybrid that shifts between round and teardrop shapes depending on body position, aligning with natural breast dynamics. Only available for Motiva brand implants.

Surface Textures

Smooth Surface: Soft feel with natural movement. Lower risk of certain complications but may have higher rotation risk with anatomical implants.

Textured Surface: Reduces implant movement and may lower capsular contracture risk. Required for teardrop implants to prevent rotation.

Nanotextured/Velvet Surface: A middle ground developed by manufacturers like Motiva (SmoothSilk). Aims to combine benefits of both smooth and textured while minimizing drawbacks.

Planning Your Breast Augmentation Trip to Thailand

How Long Do You Need to Stay?

Minimum stay: 7-9 days

Most patients need at least one week in Thailand for breast augmentation. Here's a realistic timeline:

Day 1: Arrival

Arrive in Bangkok or Phuket. Rest and adjust to the time difference. Your hospital may arrange airport pickup.

Day 2: Pre-operative Consultation

Meet your surgeon for examination, discuss implant options, finalize size selection, and complete pre-operative tests (blood work, chest X-ray if required). Many patients use sizing systems or 3D imaging to visualize results.

Day 3: Surgery

The procedure takes 1-2 hours under general anesthesia. You'll spend one night in the hospital for monitoring.

Day 4: Hospital Discharge

Most patients are discharged the morning after surgery. You'll receive pain medication, antibiotics, and a surgical bra.

Days 5-6: Hotel Recovery

Rest at your hotel near the hospital. Light walking is encouraged. Avoid raising arms above shoulder height.

Day 7: Follow-up Appointment

Return to the hospital for wound check and dressing change. Your surgeon will assess healing and provide clearance for travel if progressing well.

Day 8-9: Departure: Most patients can fly home 7-10 days after surgery once cleared by their surge

What to Bring

  • Loose, front-opening tops (button-down shirts or zip-up hoodies)
  • Comfortable sports bras (your surgeon will advise on specifications)
  • Slip-on shoes to avoid bending
  • Medications you currently take
  • Medical records if you have previous breast surgery
  • Compression garments if combining with other procedures

Combining Breast Augmentation with Other Procedures

Many patients maximize their trip by combining breast augmentation with complementary procedures:

Popular combinations:

Combined procedures require longer recovery time. Discuss options with your surgeon during consultation. If you're looking for breast revision, implant issues, or removing old implants, see our guides on breast implant removal and breast implant replacement.

Choosing the right surgeon and provider

Thailand has many excellent plastic surgeons. For breast augmentation specifically, look for surgeons who focus on breast procedures as a primary specialty rather than generalists.

  • Board certification in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery from Thailand's Medical Council
  • Membership in ISAPS (International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery) or similar international bodies
  • Experienced and able to provide before-after pictures of previous clients

Look for clinics or hospitals with accreditations, awards and a strong reputation over a longer period of time.

  • National and international accreditation like JCI (Joint Commission International), AACI (American Accreditation Commission International) and HA (Hospital Accreditation Thailand)

Finally, make sure to get high quality implants, be cautious of facilities that:

  • Don't disclose implant brands or sources
  • Offer prices significantly below market rates
  • Can't provide warranty documentation
  • Pressure you into immediate decisions

Common Questions

How much does breast augmentation surgery cost in Thailand

Arrow down

Breast augmentation in Thailand typically costs between $1,400 and $7,000 USD, depending on the hospital, surgeon, and implant brand selected. Entry-level options with Eurosilicone implants at The Art Clinic start around 49,000 THB, while premium Motiva JOY implants can reach 249,000 THB. This usually includes surgeon fees, implants, hospital stay, anesthesia, and follow-up appointments. Compare this to $8,000-$12,000 in the US or $10,000-$20,000 AUD in Australia.

How long do I need to stay in Thailand for breast implant surgery?

Arrow down

Plan for a minimum of 7-9 days: 1-2 days for consultation and pre-operative preparation, surgery day with overnight hospital stay, and 5-6 days of recovery before flying home. Your surgeon will clear you for travel once healing progresses normally. Many patients extend to 10-14 days to combine recovery with light tourism.

You'll have a follow-up appointment around day 7 where your surgeon assesses wound healing and provides travel clearance. Wear your surgical bra and loose clothing for the flight.

Can breast augmentation be combined with other procedures?

Arrow down

Yes, breast augmentation is commonly combined with breast lift, liposuction, or tummy tuck (often called a "mommy makeover"). Combining procedures reduces overall recovery time and travel costs compared to separate trips. Discuss your goals with your surgeon during consultation to determine if combining procedures is appropriate for your situation.

Which hospitals in Thailand are best for breast augmentation?

Arrow down

Top hospitals include Phuket Plastic Surgery Institute (PPSI) for Motiva implants and natural results, Yanhee International Hospital or Wansiri for value and experience, Kamol Cosmetic Hospital for gender-affirming procedures, and Rattinan Medical Center for AACI-certified care. The best choice depends on your specific goals, preferred implant brand, and whether you want Bangkok or Phuket for recovery.

What implant brands are available in Thailand?

They helped us with translating in Laos; they organised a taxi driver who was waiting for us at arrival and drove us to the hospital, where they organised a scan for me. I only needed to show my passport and an email when I arrived. I was already in the system for the appointment.

Everything went really smoothly. The company is professional and reliable, and the staff is super friendly too. I would highly recommend this company. I am grateful for the great service this company offered when I was in need."
